Présentation

En 2021, l’EHESS lance EHESS Spring Talks, le « Mois de l'international de l’EHESS ». Cet événement, composé de rencontres virtuelles quotidiennes, valorise l’activité de formation par la recherche propre à l'EHESS, fondée sur le dialogue interdisciplinaire.

Ces rencontres, destinées aux étudiants et aux enseignants-chercheurs des établissements partenaires de l'EHESS dans le monde, seront organisées chaque année, avec de nouvelles interventions, de manière à couvrir progressivement une variété de séminaires représentatifs des approches et thématiques de l'École.

Lors de 18 rencontres quotidiennes de ce mois de mai 2021, 27 enseignants-chercheurs présenteront, dont certains du CRH (voir programme ci-dessous) leurs séminaires de recherche en anglais, en espagnol ou en français. Ils seront programmés à 15h (UTC+1) chaque jour, de façon à pouvoir être accessibles pour le plus grand nombre de participants du monde entier.

Toutes les rencontres seront diffusées en direct dans le monde entier via un outil de visioconférence. Les participants pourront librement échanger avec les enseignants-chercheurs après chaque présentation de séminaire. Les séances seront enregistrées, permettant ainsi un accès en différé par le plus grand nombre.

Americanization of the European university, Europeanization of the American society, remanence of an archaic or native society in the USA? Around 1910, Max Weber was unable to decide. In the 19^th century, philosophers, psychologists and sociologists—natives or immigrants—, introduced the history of philosophy into the American colleges, learned societies, and universities. Mirroring the European nations and their learned colonization of the past, this science challenged the (very diverse) conceptions of the American “mind”.

"Race in Early Modern times: Social processes, Categorizations, Ideologies of Exclusion"

Our seminar’s principal aim is to explore the issue of the racialization of Western societies and their colonies in its historical depth. We invite students to relate phenomena that might be familiar to them but that they do not always connect. While focusing on the early modern period (15^th-18^th centuries), we are in constant dialogue with contemporary historiography, without neglecting the tensions running through our own societies. To do so, we combine three complementary ways of studying societies: the history of politics, the history of knowledge and art history.

For years, researchers placed the birth of the prison in the 19th century, conceiving it as a coherent system of discourse, buildings and methods of treatment. But the history of the prison has its roots in a much more distant past. Our seminar is interested in the practices, techniques and spaces of confinement since Early Modern Times: in Western monasteries whose rules and spatial structures inform modern confinement, in urban goals where prisoners for debt, heterodox people, prostitutes and ordinary offenders mix, or in the multifunctional establishments such as the Dutch Tuchthuizen or the German Zuchthäuser. The aim is to grasp the dynamics that unfold over time in this vast field of practices, spaces and uses, through the experience of those who inhabit these closed worlds and in their links with the society that surrounds them and has generated them.
