1994 : Habilitation in social anthropology at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Zurich (the youngest anthropologist to habilitate in German speaking Europe after the war)

1992 : Dr. phil. (PhD) in social anthropology (with the first summa cum laude in the history of the department), University of Zurich

1989 : Lic. phil. I (M.A.) in social anthropology, sociology and sociology of mass communications, University of Zurich

1976-1981 : High school and college education with degree (Abitur with humanistic orientation) in Schaffhausen, Switzerland
